From what I’ve read on line, fantasy sports are competitions wherein real sports players are selected onto phantom teams based on their statistical prowess. The outcome of any “game” is determined by a master score keeper who calculates (based on the player stats) which team would have won an actual game.
So ….. I’ve noticed that whenever an actual sporting event is televised, each player’s accomplishments and abilities are scrupulously studied and posted onscreen, down to the tiniest detail. Couldn’t we do the same thing here?
Imagine: Two busloads of opposing team players would arrive in the parking lot of whatever stadium. They would be dressed in the customary costumes of their sport, but would not disembark. Instead they would do their requisite chest thumping, leaping about and hooting out the windows of their buses toward the opposing team, which would be doing the same gesticulating and braying back at them. (Think professional wrestlers or roller derby participants hurling threats and insults onscreen before a match)
After an appropriate amount of time, the master scorekeepers would feed the players’ stats into an on scene laptop, and within a few moments the winning team would be announced.
At this point the buses would empty out and the opposing teams would shuffle off to their respective locker rooms, and depending on the outcome, celebrate or sulk while being interviewed by ESPN, etc about their feelings.
No need for spectators to bother actually travelling to the non event. They could watch the bus-bound displays of exploding testosterone on TV without ever leaving the couch. Or the sports bar, for those who depend on frantic crowd hysteria and body odor to heighten their enjoyment.
