In claiming that the president has broad powers to claim “a national emergency,” Republicans point out that the congressional narrative of the law passed in 1976, was purposely vague about what constitutes such an emergency.
Of course, in 1976, when the 94th Congress passed the National Emergencies Act, electing a president like Donald Trump seemed as far fetched as putting Willy Wonka in the Oval Office. Wonka has his Oompa Loompas and Trump has his equivalent minions. But Congress never, until now, envisioned Oompa Loompas being given top secret security clearances, the new age of alternative facts, and an administration so corrupt that its officials are cycling from the West Wing to federal prison at an alarming rate.
With Republicans once again taking a knee before their orange tinted emperor, they are abdicating their last scrap of power …….. if the president can allocate taxpayer money for his personal vanity projects, who needs Congress at all? They already take more vacations that George W Bush. After the next one, they may as well just stay home.
